I Never Planned This

By Mirrors

I never planned this… not the pen, not the page,
Not the flood of truth at this age.
I was healing in silence, suppressing the rage,
Till the words broke through like a bird from a cage.

I never chose the stanzas, they just rose from my chest,
Where memory lingered and longing found rest.
Each line was a whisper, a prayer, a protest,
A cry from the soul I had once second-guessed.

I never planned poems, I planned to survive,
To keep dreams at bay, to just work and strive.
But poetry pulled me where I feel alive,
Where truth doesn’t beg, it just arrives

Now I’m a poet not by will, but by fate,
A mirror to moments both bitter and great.
I speak what I feel, I translate the weight,
And write to remind us: it’s never too late.

didn’t seek rhythm or rhymes in the night,
But i guess the lost person in me needed light.
So I wrote what I felt, not what sounded right,
And poetry answered, bold, brilliant and bright.

Mirrors is a multidisciplinary creative, poet, and nurse from Masunga, Botswana. She began
writing poetry in 2022 as a form of emotional release, rooted in her journey of healing,
awakening, and cultural remembrance. With over 15 years of nursing experience, including a
decade in psychiatric healthcare, her creative work is deeply informed by the resilience,
struggles, and transformations she has witnessed in others and within herself.

Her poetry speaks to the sacred, the silenced, and the self-rediscovered, guiding readers toward inner peace and self-remembrance. In 2025, she founded The House of Mirrors Creative Media Pty Ltd, a platform for storytelling, publishing, and self expression.

Her recent achievements include being long-listed for the 2025 Asian Prize for Poetry with her
poem “The Earth Won’t Wait,” and contributing to the forthcoming anthology, Who We Be!
Global Black Women’s Creative Anthology
with her poem “A Call To The Feminine”.

Through her work, Mirrors offers art that is both medicine and mirror.
