Later

Akim Mbwemanga

“Later, later,” I cried.
Mother Nature smiled
Knowing precisely all that’s meant to be,
Everything her spouse had in store for me,
“Do it later,” I said, unfortunately.

Father Time grinned,
“He said later?”
He burst into laughter
“Doesn’t he know I’m fleeting?”
His tone was clear, I had sinned.

“Do it later,” I said
With pride swelling around my head
Forgetting that’s when the coffee gets cold
Neglecting the bread turning into mould.

As Day plunges into the darkness of Night,
I’m reminded that every minute I get old
My story should not remain untold.

As Father Time ticks the seconds on the spot,
And Mother Nature picks the fruits before they rot,
I begin to appreciate that Now is the only later I’ve got.
To think that I have later is to be foolishly bold,
And in this poem my story has been told.
