I Wish You Cheated

By Angel Joseph

I wish you cheated, broke my heart in two,
Left a stain so deep, I could hate you.
I wish you lied, said cruel things in spite,
So I’d have a reason to block you at night.

But you were kind, and that’s what hurts most,
No slam of the door, no haunting ghost.
You walked away with tears in your eyes,
And now I’m left with the softest goodbye.

No villain to name, no blame to cast,
Just love that faded, too good to last.
How do I heal when there’s no one to blame?
When every thought of you feels the same?

I wish you’d broken me, torn us apart,
So I could bury your name deep in my heart.
But all I have are memories sweet,
And silence that echoes with no defeat.

So I rewrite the ending in my mind’s dark skies,
Paint you with coldness, rewrite your lies.
But even in fiction you’re still too good—
And I’d take you back, if I only could.
